Georgian footballer will receive a UEFA award for supporting the LGBTQ community.

Defender of the American “San Jose Earthquakes” and the Georgian national football team Guram Kashia became winner of the award EqualGame for his contribution into the struggle for equality.

According to the press service of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the 31-year-old defender will be awarded on August 30 in Monaco at the draw for the Champions League group stage.

In November 2017, when Kashia defended the colors of Vitesse, he took part in the action of the captains of all Dutch clubs that played on the domestic arena with rainbow-colored dressings, thereby expressing support for the LGBTQ community.

After this action, threats and criticism fell on Kashia at home, but he did not change his position on this issue, after which other players and football functionaries began to speak out to support him.

Earlier it was reported that David Beckham won the 2018 UEFA President Award.
